Many Scammers Claim to Be from Germany
With international online dating the geographical boundaries have disappeared. Unfortunately this has also opened the door for scammers to prey on unsuspecting victims. Most of these fraudsters are from Africa and use fake identities to deceive their targets.
These are organized scams. They can be men or women and use the same playbook for both.
They steal photos of real people, invent a German name and create a fake profile. These profiles are on multiple platforms:
- Tinder
- Craigslist
- Badoo
- OKCupid
- Zoosk
- Various online dating sites
Does your online romance promise a wonderful life together? Be cautious if they suddenly ask for money.
The Scammers’ Strategy: Searching for Their Next Victim
Because these scammers typically have a strong African accent, they avoid impersonating people from English-speaking countries like the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, or Australia. Instead, they often claim to be from countries where their accent may be less conspicuous, such as Germany. This also provides a convenient explanation for their poor English and frequent grammatical errors.
However, scammers don’t limit themselves to German identities. They might claim to be from various other countries, including:
- Austria
- Switzerland
- Sweden
- Norway
- Spain
- Italy
- Korea
- Greece
When they interact with their victims over the phone or via voice messages, their accents may go unnoticed, as their supposed nationality aligns with the language differences.
Scammers’ Tricks: Winning Hearts and Emptying Wallets
Not everyone on Facebook or Instagram is looking for real connections. Scammers create fake profiles, using stolen photos of real people, sometimes even posing as soldiers or professionals to gain trust.
Once their profile is set up, they cast a wide net, messaging hundreds of people all over the world until someone responds.
Let’s take an example: A scammer pretends to be a man from Germany. He sends friend requests to many women, regardless of their looks or age. His own profile with nice pictures eventually catches someone’s attention. It’s only a matter of time before a woman accepts the request and starts talking.
This is where the scam begins. Over the next few days or weeks, he builds an intense relationship with his target through emails, text messages and apps like WhatsApp or Google Chat (read more on Google Chat Scams). He showers her with compliments and sweet messages, creating an illusion of a perfect romance.
A Perfect Illusion
Let’s say his target is a woman from the US. He tells her he’s a widower, looking for a partner to spend the rest of his life with. His dream is to retire in the US and live out his days in comfort. He says he’s financially secure, with a big savings from his successful career. Together they can live worry free.
He describes a perfect life: a nice house, a luxury car and a life full of love and happiness. His words are so sweet and considerate that she’s never met someone so caring and nice.
Scammers often send pictures of houses or cars as proof of their wealth. However, these images are usually stolen from others.
The Ask: When Trouble Strikes
After all the trust you’ve built, the scammer throws a curveball. Just as he’s about to meet his soulmate, something unexpected happens and he can’t access his funds. To explain this, he spins a tall tale. Common examples include:
-
Engineer on an oil rig
-
Captain of a cargo ship
-
Soldier on an international mission
-
Successful car dealer in Africa
Each scenario gives him a reason for his financial woes. The alleged problems range from dealing with authorities, customs or police to being robbed or held by pirates. Other claims might be:
- Accident with hospital bills
- Serious illness and mounting medical expenses
- Stolen credit cards or frozen bank accounts
- Customs fees
Whatever the story, the result is always the same: he needs money and turns to his new love for help. He asks for a temporary loan, promising to pay it back when his problem is solved.
The Brutal Truth
Once you send money, it’s gone forever. He never intended to pay you back. Instead, he’ll probably come up with more emergencies to get more from you.
Many people turn to online dating platforms, dating apps, and dating websites in search of love and companionship. But not everyone you meet online has good intentions. Online romance scams are on the rise, and scammers are targeting people looking for real connections.
They create fake profiles to lure in unsuspecting victims and use emotional manipulation to build trust. Once they have your trust, they ask for money – sometimes for medical emergencies, travel expenses, or other bogus reasons.
Remember, the goal of these online romance scams is always the same – to take other people’s money. Be cautious and never send money to someone you haven’t met in person, no matter how good the story sounds.
Follow the Money: Where Does It Go?
Interestingly, the money never goes to the scammer’s supposed name. Instead, you’re told to send money to third-party accounts or via anonymous methods like:
-
Western Union
-
MoneyGram
-
Bitcoin wallets
These intermediaries are often described as agents, diplomats or trusted associates. The real reason? The scammer doesn’t exist under the fake identity he’s created so can’t use a bank account in his alias name.
Protect Yourself: Avoid Sending Money or Personal Details
The golden rule to prevent falling victim to online dating scams is simple: never send money or personal information to someone you’ve only met online. Scammers often request:
- Steam Cards
- Google Play Cards
- Amazon Gift Cards
- Apple Gift Cards
- iTunes Cards
These requests are a red flag. They may also ask for money via electronic currency, wire transfers, or pre-loaded cards. Whether it’s a small amount or a large sum, never agree to send money in advance.
Also, don’t give out sensitive financial information, such as your bank account or credit card information. Doing so could lead to identity theft or unauthorized transactions. Always err on the side of caution when dealing with someone you haven’t verified.
Be cautious if your online romance suddenly asks for money.
